Barnfield Road
A family home for nature lovers

Relocating to St Albans, our clients purchased a semi-detached property with the vision of transforming it into their dream family home. With a generous 50-metre-long, south-facing garden framed by mature trees and planting, their top priority was to embrace the inside-outside living concept—a lifestyle they cherished from childhood and wanted to recreate for their own young family.

A standalone side garage, typical of this house type, has been transformed and linked to the main house through a new living, dining, and kitchen extension. With exposed timber roofs and a window seat framing garden views, the extension draws daylight deep into the home while blurring the boundary between interior and landscape. The converted garage now accommodates a study and garden room, opening on to a semi-enclosed patio that flows seamlessly into the garden beyond.

Upstairs, the floor plan has been reconfigured to provide larger, more flexible bedrooms, while the repositioned kitchen sits at the heart of the home, oriented to enhance social living and garden views. Crafted in oak with elegant floating shelving, the kitchen balances warmth and refinement.

Light-coloured brickwork with flush mortar joints gives the rear elevation a crisp, contemporary character, completing the transformation and creating a modern family home rooted in its garden setting.
