Langley Crescent
Rejuvenating a suburban home
Langley Crescent in St Albans is a typical suburban street, lined with generous semi-detached pebbledash houses. While pebbledash often divides opinion, these homes are usually spacious inside and full of potential. Recognising this, our client commissioned us to transform their recently purchased property into a modern, sociable family home.
The house had been extended in the past but still felt dated, with a series of small, disconnected rooms on the ground floor. Our proposal rationalises this layout by introducing a single-storey kitchen and dining extension, opening on to a remodelled raised terrace. This new heart of the home creates a fluid connection with the garden, encouraging family life and entertaining. The extension will be clad in terracotta-coloured tiles—chosen to complement the sandy tones of the existing house—and topped with a wildflower meadow roofscape.
At the front, the redundant integral garage will be reimagined as a practical boot-room style entrance with utility and storage, making everyday life more efficient. On the first floor, a modest extension unlocks the potential for a reconfigured plan, improving the flow and proportions of the bedrooms.
The attic will be converted with a new rear dormer, also clad in terracotta tiles with fine detailing to echo the extension below. This addition will form a master suite, complete with dramatic views across Batchwood parkland.
