Lynwood
Breathing new life to a 1960s building
Located in Harpenden, Lynwood is a distinctive 1960s apartment building, modern in design and largely untouched since its construction over 50 years ago.
Uninhabitable in its existing condition, the single apartment occupies an elevated position above garaging. Our proposal remodelled, refurbished, and extended the building to preserve its original floating 1960s aesthetic while transforming it into a low-energy, future-proofed home. Highly insulated and wrapped in zinc and timber cladding, the renewed building achieves a sleek, contemporary presence and comfortable living environment.
Internally, the reconfigured plan reverses the original layout, creating an additional bedroom and study alongside an improved sequence of social spaces.
The new thermal envelope is finished in standing seam zinc and slender larch cladding, giving the home a crisp modern appearance while retaining the integrity of its original form.
In addition to the retrofit, a side extension establishes a new entrance with increased ceiling heights and a framed view into the entrance courtyard, achieved through an oriel picture window that visually engages with this private outdoor space.
