Redevelopent of garage site with a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) house
When our client approached Feneley Studio to explore the possibility of building a contemporary family home on the footprint of an existing double garage in Shepherds Bush, it was clear from the outset that the site had a number of challenging constraints. The site was bounded on all sides by neighbours and any redevelopment would need to be a direct response to these boundaries and the airspace that could be built within.
The design process was therefore heavily influenced by Rights of Light to neighbours, resulting in a design with complex geometrics that required an ultra efficient structural system for the build. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) was the obvious choice; its structural abilities would not only enable accurate setting out, but from a design point of view would provide a fine finish, keeping structural lines slender and efficient and meeting our client’s brief for a modern, light and minimal home.
