Redevelopment of garage site with a bespoke, contemporary family home

Sitting on the former site of 12 lock-up garages, the site was redeveloped for a family wishing to live in a modern, detached home in the heart of Tunbridge Wells. Prior to Feneley Studio’s appointment, the site had a number of failed planning applications for residential redevelopment.  

 

Working closely with our client, and in consultation with neighbouring home owners and Tunbridge Wells’ planning department, we designed a contemporary, five-bedroom family home with two bedroom wings that are linked by a single-storey family spaces overlooking a walled garden. 

 

This ‘split-house’ concept, devised in response to the form and scale of the streetscape and in particular the adjacent nineteenth century Coach House, reduced the massing that a single volume would present with a large family home, resulting in planning approval first time.
